The best thing about this baseball season so far has to be the emergence of Baltimore Orioles first baseman, Chris Davis, who was the first player in the majors to hit 30 home runs. Davis, who was a journeyman for the first three years in Texas, got an opportunity to play everyday when he was traded to Baltimore back in 2011, for reliever Koji Uehara. Do you think Texas is regretting that trade now?
Davis played his first full season last year and hit career highs in home runs (33) and RBI(85) while playing 139 games. Now that he is an everyday player and no longer looking over his shoulder after every at-bat, Chris is now putting up numbers that only last year's MVP and Triple Crown winner, Miguel Cabrera can only relate too. Davis has reached the half-way point of the 2013 season and as of now he is making a serious run at the MVP award. His following numbers thru 81 games look like this: .333BA 30HR 79RBI. He is on-base forty percent of the time with a .704SLG and of course the 4.0WAR! Davis is leading the majors in home runs with 30, trailing in the RBI category two behind Cabrera and second in batting average also behind Cabrera who leads all of baseball with a .375 average.
Chris Davis is the 34th player to reach 30HR before the all-star break. Could this be the year that someone who isn't linked to the steroid era, to go after the original home run mark set by Roger Maris. I know Barry Bonds holds the baseball record but if by chance Davis's magical year continues and he challenges #61, then we all know what the topic of conversation will be.
